What Does Mark 10:33 Mean?
This is the third and fullest announcement of the passion in Mark. Jesus lays out the stages: betrayal into the hands of the chief priests and scribes, a sentence of death from the council, and delivery to the Gentiles, the Roman power that will carry it out.
Nothing about the cross will take Jesus by surprise; he reads every step beforehand and still says, Behold, we go up. He includes the twelve in the journey while bearing the sentence alone. Such foreknowledge makes the obedience costlier and the love plainer.
