What Does Mark 11:14 Mean?
Jesus 'answered' the tree, as though its showy leaves had made a claim he now refutes. His sentence is final—no fruit from it hereafter, forever. Mark adds that the disciples heard, preparing us for what they will find the next morning (Mark 11:20).
This is the only miracle in Mark that withers rather than heals, and it falls on a tree, not a person—an acted prophecy in the manner of Jeremiah's broken jar (Jeremiah 19), performed for the disciples' instruction. Fruitless show ends in barrenness; the temple that is all leaves stands under the same word. Yet the sign is given so that hearers may still repent and bear fruit.
