People had taken to hauling wares and vessels through the great court as a thoroughfare between the city and the mount. For a time Jesus halts the traffic entirely; only Mark records this detail of the day.
The act insists that holy space is not common space. The outer court existed for worship and prayer—the place where the nations could seek Israel's God—not as the fastest route across town, and Jesus guards its purpose with his own authority. Beneath the act lies a question for every worshiper since: has the holy become merely convenient to us, something we pass through on the way to something else?
