Jesus meets the council's demand with a counter-question, an honored form of debate among teachers of the law. It is no evasion: the question he is about to pose carries the answer to theirs, if they will deal honestly with it.
Jesus does not hand his holiest claims to those who only want ammunition, but neither does he refuse light to any who will receive it.
