What Does Mark 11:33 Mean?
'We cannot tell' is not ignorance but evasion—the one reply that risks nothing and confesses nothing. Jesus holds to his stated terms: since they will not answer, neither will he. He then turns at once to a parable that answers them anyway—the vineyard and the beloved son (Mark 12:1-12).
Truth refused does not remain on offer in the same form. Jesus will not hand his holiest claims to those committed to misusing them; yet his silence is mercy as well as judgment, withholding words that would only harden and condemn. He goes on giving light to the willing and parables to the resistant, always leaving a door ajar—the story he tells next is itself an appeal.
