What Does Mark 12:11 Mean?
Jesus finishes the quotation with Psalm 118:23. The psalm does not credit the stone's exaltation to the builders' second thoughts -- they never repented of rejecting it. The reversal is God's own work, accomplished over their heads.
The cross looked like the triumph of the builders; the resurrection revealed it as the Lord's doing (Acts 2:23-24). God's greatest work is accomplished precisely through what men meant for destruction (Genesis 50:20). And the fitting response is named in the verse itself: wonder. Faith never quite gets over the marvel that the rejected one reigns, and that the darkest day in history became the wellspring of all our hope.
