What Does Mark 14:33 Mean?
Jesus takes the three who saw his transfiguration — Peter, James, and John — deeper into the garden. The men who watched his glory on the mountain are now to watch his anguish. The words of Mark are startlingly strong: he began to be sore amazed, gripped by horror, and very heavy, weighed down with distress.
Scripture does not present a Jesus untouched by what approaches. He is the man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3), and in Gethsemane the sorrow breaks over him in full. For everyone who has trembled before what God has asked of them, this verse is strange comfort: the Lord himself stood in that place — and went forward.
