What Does Mark 14:40 Mean?
A second time Jesus comes back for companionship and finds sleep instead. Their eyes were heavy — the detail is compassionate, the exhaustion of men drowning in sorrow — and when roused they had no answer, just as they had none on the mountain of transfiguration (Mark 9:6).
The shame of being found failing again, with nothing to say, is a feeling every honest disciple knows. Yet notice what Jesus does not do: he does not dismiss them, replace them, or recite their failures. He returns to his praying and lets them be weak.
