Mark 14:50 Meaning and Explanation

One short sentence, and the fellowship of three years scatters: they all forsook him, and fled. The all answers the all of verse 31 — all had vowed to die with him; all run. The prophecy of the smitten shepherd and the scattered sheep (Mark 14:27) is fulfilled within the hour.

Jesus goes forward utterly alone — deserted by friends before he is condemned by enemies, so that no depth of human abandonment would be unknown to him (Hebrews 4:15). Yet remember what he had already promised the deserters: after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. Their flight is the low point of their story, not the end of it.
