What Does Mark 14:62 Mean?
After all the silence, two words: I am. Then Jesus joins two Scriptures into one declaration: the Son of man coming with the clouds of heaven from Daniel 7:13, and the king seated at the right hand from Psalm 110:1. The prisoner tells his judges that they will yet see him enthroned and returning.
It is the most open declaration Jesus ever makes of himself, given at the very moment it guarantees his death. The reserve that ran through this Gospel falls away when concealment would cost the truth. Condemned for this confession, he makes every later confession of him possible: whosoever shall confess him before men, he will confess before his Father (Matthew 10:32).
