What Does Mark 15:37 Mean?
There is no slow fading. Jesus dies with a loud voice, strength still in him at the end, startling for a crucified man, as the centurion's reaction will show, and then he breathes out his last.
Mark's wording is spare and mighty: he gave up the ghost; his life was not wrung from him, it was yielded. No man taketh it from me, he had said, but I lay it down of myself (John 10:18). John records what the loud voice declared: It is finished (John 19:30). His death is the one death in history that was wholly an act and not merely an end, the Shepherd laying down his life for the sheep, on purpose, with a shout.
