The Gospel does not soften what is handed over: a dead body, truly dead, for the Son of God went all the way down into our death, not partway. And notice the quiet providence in the transfer: the body that mockers would have left to shame passes instead into reverent hands. From this verse onward no enemy touches Jesus again.
