What Does Mark 5:16 Mean?
Those who saw it all tell the newcomers both halves of the story: what happened to the man who had been possessed, and what happened to the swine. The healing and the cost arrive in the same breath.
Mark places the two reports side by side because the townspeople are about to weigh them against each other. A neighbor restored to his right mind; a herd lost in the sea. The facts are not in dispute -- only their value. It is possible to hear an accurate account of the work of God and still tally it as a loss. What we treasure decides what we hear.
