What Does Mark 5:18 Mean?
Jesus accepts the region's request and steps into the ship. Now comes one more plea: the man who had been possessed begs "that he might be with him." The demons begged, the citizens begged; now gratitude begs.
His request is the truest in the chapter. Having been given back his mind and his life, he wants nothing but the company of the one who gave them. Mark has already told us that Jesus appointed the Twelve first of all "that they should be with him" (Mark 3:14); this man, unbidden, asks for exactly that. It remains the healed heart's first instinct: not to use Christ, but to be near him.
