What Does Mark 5:20 Mean?
The man obeys and then some: sent home to his friends, he heralds the news through the Decapolis, the league of ten Greek cities east of the Jordan. Mark frames the report with a quiet echo -- Jesus told him to declare what the Lord had done; he goes and declares what Jesus had done.
Let that echo do its work: the mercy of the Lord and the deeds of Jesus are told as one story. So the region that asked Jesus to leave keeps a witness it cannot silence, and when Jesus returns to those parts (Mark 7:31), crowds are waiting.
