What Does Mark 5:40 Mean?
The weeping turns instantly to scornful laughter -- the mourners know death when they see it, and their laughter, ironically, certifies that the girl has truly died. Jesus clears the house and takes only the father, the mother, and the three disciples in to where the child lies.
Unbelief gets no seat at this miracle; it is put outside the door it shut by its own scorn. Mockery never argues Christ out of his purposes -- it only excludes itself from beholding them. Inside the room remain the people of bruised, hoping faith, and before their few eyes he will do what the laughing crowd will only hear about.
