What Does Mark 5:9 Mean?
Jesus asks for a name, and the reply is chilling: "My name is Legion: for we are many." A legion was a Roman army division of several thousand soldiers. The man's own name has been buried beneath an occupying army; asked who he is, only the occupation answers.
The word measures the hopelessness of the case by every human reckoning -- and the ease of heaven's answer. Jesus is not outnumbered. He does not summon reinforcements or raise his voice; one word from the Son of God outweighs a legion. Whatever has multiplied itself in a life until it answers in place of the person, it is not stronger than Christ.
