What Does Mark 6:17 Mean?
Mark pauses the story of Jesus to tell how John came to die. Herod had taken Herodias, the wife of his own brother, and when John confronted the marriage, Herod seized the prophet and chained him in prison for her sake.
Power tried to silence the voice it could not refute. The arrest shows what happens when truth becomes inconvenient to the throne: the messenger is bound so the message need not be obeyed.
