The teaching has run long, and the disciples grow practical. They come to Jesus with the facts: a desert place, a late hour, and, implied beneath both, a crowd with no supper. Their arithmetic is sound; their conclusion is about to be corrected.
The disciples state the problem to the only one who is not bound by it. It is right to bring Jesus the facts; the lesson of the next verses is not to bring him the conclusion too. Many prayers describe the desert accurately and forget who is standing in it.
