What Does Matthew 1:6 Mean?
The genealogy arrives at its first high point: David, named twice as king. From him the promise of an everlasting throne was given. Yet the next name comes by way of a painful memory, for Solomon's mother is identified only as the former wife of Uriah.
Matthew does not soften David's sin; he lets the wound show. The greatest king in Israel's story was also a man in need of forgiveness, and from that mended life the line of promise still flowed. Grace, not merit, carries the lineage forward.
