What Does Matthew 10:24 Mean?
To prepare the disciples for the hatred he has described, Jesus turns to a plain principle from common life. A student does not outrank his teacher, nor a servant his master. The follower walks the road the leader has walked.
If the world has opposed the Master, his servants should not expect to escape. This truth removes both surprise and pride: surprise, because the disciple now knows what to expect; pride, because no follower may claim a higher place than the Lord he serves. To share in Christ's mission is to share in his lot, and there is a strange honor in being treated as he was.
