Matthew 10:36 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus completes the hard saying drawn from Micah: a person's foes may be those of his own household. The opposition a disciple meets can come not from strangers but from the people who share his roof and his name.

This is perhaps the loneliest cost of discipleship, to find resistance where one most longed for understanding. Yet Jesus speaks it openly, that no follower might feel forsaken or think his suffering strange. To know in advance that loyalty to Christ may wound the closest ties is to be prepared to hold fast, trusting that the Lord who asks such loyalty will himself be nearer than any kin.
