What Does Matthew 10:7 Mean?
Jesus now gives the content of their preaching. It is the same message he himself proclaimed and that John the Baptist announced before him: the kingdom of heaven is at hand. The disciples carry no new doctrine of their own; they echo the word of their Master.
That the kingdom has drawn near means God's reign is breaking into the world in the person and work of Christ. The announcement calls for readiness, a turning of the heart toward the One who is near. To preach this is to invite people to live now as those who belong to a coming and present kingdom, ordering their lives by its King.
