What Does Matthew 10:9 Mean?
Having charged them to give freely, Jesus now strips them of provision. They are not to carry gold, silver, or copper, the three metals of common coinage, from the most valuable to the least. They go out with empty purses.
This is a deliberate training in trust. By withholding money, Jesus teaches his messengers to lean on God and on the hospitality God will stir in others. The kingdom's work is not bankrolled by human wealth but sustained by the Father who sends. To travel light is to confess that the One who calls will also provide.
