Matthew 12:16 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus instructs the healed crowds not to spread word of who he is. This restraint runs through Matthew's account. Jesus does not seek fame or a following built on spectacle, nor will he let a rising clamor force his mission off its appointed path.

His humility is deliberate. He came not to be acclaimed as a wonder-worker but to give himself for the world in God's own time and way. By quieting the crowds, he keeps the focus on his purpose rather than on public excitement. The next verses show that this very meekness fulfills the ancient portrait of God's chosen Servant, who does his saving work without noise or self-display.
