What Does Matthew 12:41 Mean?
Jesus warns that the people of Nineveh will rise at the judgment and condemn his generation. Those pagan people repented at Jonah's preaching, turning from their sin at a single prophet's word. Yet here stands one far greater than Jonah, and his generation will not repent.
The contrast shames the unbelief before him. If Nineveh turned to God at the warning of Jonah, how much greater the guilt of those who hear Christ himself and refuse. Greater light brings greater responsibility. The mercy of God reaches even to distant nations who repent; the danger lies in hearing the greatest of all messengers and hardening the heart.
