Matthew 12:9 Meaning and Explanation

Matthew moves the scene from the open fields to the synagogue, the place of public worship and teaching on the sabbath. Jesus enters as one who belongs there, ready to teach and to do good among the gathered people.

The setting matters. What follows will unfold before the eyes of the whole assembly, in the very house meant for honoring God. Christ does not avoid the watching crowd or the hostile gaze of his critics. He steps openly into their midst, where his works of mercy can be seen by all and where the true keeping of the sabbath will be put on display.
