Jesus turns to the second soil. The stony-ground hearer welcomes the word at once and with joy, anon meaning straightway. This response looks bright and promising; there is real gladness in the reception.
Yet joy alone is not the measure of true faith. A glad beginning can still rest on shallow ground.
