Jesus comes into His own country, the region of Nazareth where He grew up, and teaches in the synagogue. The people are astonished and ask where this man got such wisdom and such mighty works. His teaching and power leave them amazed.
Their astonishment, however, is mixed with unease. They are impressed yet unsettled, because they think they already know who He is. The verse sets up a sad irony: those who knew Jesus longest are the slowest to receive Him. It quietly warns the reader against letting familiarity dull our wonder, lest we, too, stand near to Christ and yet fail to honor who He truly is.
