What Does Matthew 16:14 Mean?
The disciples relay the popular guesses. Some thought Jesus was John the Baptist raised, others Elijah, whose return was long awaited, others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Each answer was respectful, even high, placing Jesus among the great figures of God's dealings with his people.
Yet every one of these answers fell short. To call Jesus a prophet, however honored, is to put him in a category he transcends. The crowd admired him but had not grasped him. It is possible to think well of Christ and still miss who he truly is. Admiration is not the same as recognition, and the verses ahead will press toward something far deeper than a flattering comparison.
