What Does Matthew 17:1 Mean?
This opens directly after Jesus foretold His death and said some standing there would see the Son of man coming in His kingdom. He now draws apart the inner three -- Peter, James, and John -- and climbs a high mountain, the kind of set-apart place where God had so often met His people.
Jesus prepares these witnesses for something their hearts could not yet hold. The God who spoke from Sinai and met Elijah on Horeb is about to be revealed again on a height, and the way up is one of quiet trust. He still draws those He loves apart to show them His glory.
