What Does Matthew 17:9 Mean?
The mountaintop gives way to the road down. Jesus calls what they saw a vision and commands silence about it until the Son of man has risen from the dead -- the first hint to the three that His path leads through death to resurrection.
The glory could not be rightly understood apart from the cross and empty tomb. Only on the far side of the resurrection would the radiance make sense. Like the disciples, we are sometimes given a glimpse meant to sustain us through suffering still to come, carried quietly in the heart until its meaning is made plain.
