What Does Matthew 18:1 Mean?
This opens a long stretch of teaching, sometimes called the discourse on the church. The disciples have been arguing among themselves about status, and they bring the question straight to Jesus: who is the greatest? It is the kind of question that assumes the kingdom works like every earthly court, with a ladder of rank to climb.
Jesus will answer not with a name but with a child set in their midst. The very framing of the question reveals a heart still measuring itself against others.
