What Does Matthew 18:25 Mean?
The servant has nothing with which to pay, and so the king orders him sold along with his wife, children, and all he owns, that something might be recovered. It is the harsh logic of an unpayable debt.
The moment lays bare the servant's helplessness. There is no scheme, no resource, no escape; the debt simply exceeds him. So it is with us before God when we reckon honestly with our sin. We have nothing to offer that could settle the account. This emptiness is exactly where mercy must enter, for nothing else can save.
