What Does Matthew 22:23 Mean?
A second wave arrives. The Sadducees were the priestly aristocracy of the temple; they denied the resurrection of the dead, along with angel and spirit (Acts 23:8). Where the Pharisees set a political trap, these men bring a theological riddle.
They come to Jesus already certain that resurrection is impossible, asking not to learn but to mock. The scene is a caution about how we question God: the same question can be a doorway or a wall, depending on the heart that asks it. Jesus will answer them anyway -- and in doing so leave one of the great affirmations of Scripture, that the dead live unto God.
