What Does Matthew 26:54 Mean?

Jesus answers His own question with scripture: if angels swept Him to safety, how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? The prophetic word -- the smitten shepherd, the suffering servant, the pierced one -- must come true.

Thus it must be: the necessity is not blind fate but divine faithfulness. God had promised redemption through a suffering Messiah, and Jesus will not break the promise to spare Himself. He holds to the written word through the darkest night, and the word holds Him.
