Matthew sees the thirty pieces of silver fulfilling prophetic Scripture.

What Does Matthew 27:9 Mean?

Matthew connects the betrayal price to the words of the prophets, citing the thirty pieces of silver as the valuation placed upon Jesus by His own people. The sum echoes the prophetic word about a shepherd priced and rejected.

The Gospel insists that even the betrayal money was foreseen, that the suffering of Christ unfolds along the line laid down in Scripture. To be valued at thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave, measures how cheaply the Lord of glory was held by those He came to save. Yet the fulfillment shows that nothing here is accident; the rejected Shepherd walks a path the prophets had already traced.
