What Does Matthew 28:14 Mean?
The chief priests sweeten the arrangement with a guarantee. If word of the soldiers' failure reaches Pilate, the governor, they will intervene to satisfy him and keep the men out of trouble. The cover-up is given an insurance policy.
Sleeping on duty was a serious offense, so the soldiers had reason to fear. The leaders trade on their influence to shield those who serve their purposes. It is a portrait of corruption protecting itself, layer upon layer, in the effort to manage a truth too large to control. Yet all their political maneuvering is spent against a fact that no governor and no council can overturn. The risen Christ needs no defense; the schemes of men only reveal their own fear.
