Against the open amazement of the crowds, the Pharisees put forward a dark and bitter accusation: Jesus drives out demons, they say, only by the power of the prince of demons himself. Unable to deny that the deed has truly happened, since the man plainly speaks, they instead attack its source, crediting his power to evil rather than to God.
