What Does Nahum 1:12 Mean?
Now God speaks in the first person. Assyria may be at ease and vast in number, yet they will be cut down and pass away when judgment passes through. The same word turns tenderly to God's people: though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. Israel's suffering under Assyria had been real, and Scripture sometimes describes such hardship as a discipline God permitted. But its purpose was never the people's destruction, and now its end is announced.
Two audiences hear opposite words from one mouth, and the difference is everything. To the oppressor, your great numbers cannot save you. To the wounded, your pain has a limit set by Me. This is the heart of God's dealings: He brings low the proud and lifts up the broken. The promise I will afflict thee no more is a window into His fatherly intent, never to crush His own beyond healing. It anticipates the comfort fulfilled in Christ, in whom God turns from chastening to consolation and binds up what was broken.
