What Does Nehemiah 10:14 Mean?
Having recorded the priests and Levites, the document now lists the chief men of the people, the heads of the great family groups who had returned from exile. Many of these names match the family registers found earlier in Ezra and Nehemiah.
These leaders represented not only themselves but their whole households in the covenant. When a head of a family sealed the pledge, he committed those under his care to walk in God's law as well. Leadership in covenant carries responsibility for more than oneself.
