What Does Nehemiah 12:39 Mean?
The route of the second company is traced past the gate of Ephraim, the old gate, the fish gate, the towers of Hananeel and Meah, and the sheep gate, until they came to rest at the prison gate near the temple.
Naming each gate recalls how completely the city had been restored, every breach now closed and consecrated with praise. The sheep gate, through which sacrifices entered, points beyond itself to the Lamb of God. The whole circuit of the wall is given back to Him in thanksgiving, ending fittingly near His house.
