What Does Nehemiah 13:15 Mean?
Nehemiah now confronts a second disorder. He saw people in Judah treading winepresses, hauling sheaves, and loading donkeys with goods to bring into Jerusalem on the sabbath, and he warned them on the day they sold their food.
The sabbath was a gift of rest and a sign of the covenant, set apart for the Lord. To fill it with ordinary toil was to forget the God who gave it. Nehemiah's warning recalls His people to honor the day, and points beyond it to the deeper rest found in the One who invites the weary to come and find rest in Him.
