What Does Nehemiah 7:1 Mean?
The great labor of the wall is complete. Nehemiah, the governor who led the rebuilding, now turns from stone to people: the doors are set in the gateways, and those who keep the gates, lead the music, and serve at the house of God are put in their places. The defensive work and the worshipping life of the city begin together.
A wall without watchmen is only stone, and a city without praise is only walls. Nehemiah does not stop at the visible accomplishment but presses on to order the unseen life within.
