What Does Philippians 1:24 Mean?
Having confessed his longing to depart and be with Christ, Paul turns outward. Nevertheless, he says, to remain in this life is more needful for you, more necessary for the good of the believers he serves.
Love tips the scale. Paul's own preference leans toward being with the Lord, but the needs of others draw him to stay. He measures his life not only by what he desires but by what will help the people God has given him. This is the shape of a servant's heart, willing to forgo even a greater personal good for the sake of others. Paul's readiness to remain, when departure would be sweeter to him, is itself a quiet act of love poured out for the church.
