What Does Philippians 1:3 Mean?
The Philippian church had supported Paul through years of hardship, and now, writing from a prison cell, he looks back over their friendship. Rather than dwelling on his chains, his thoughts move first to gratitude.
Memory can carry many things, regret, resentment, longing, but for Paul the remembrance of these believers becomes prayer and praise. This is the fruit of a relationship built in the gospel: time and distance only deepen affection. It is worth asking what our own memories of others tend to produce. Paul shows a heart so shaped by love that recalling his friends moves him straight to thanking God, the One he recognizes as the giver of every good relationship.
