Hatred breeds conflict, but love responds to wrongs by covering them rather than spreading them. This short proverb draws a sharp contrast between two forces and their opposite effects. Hatred "stirreth up strifes": it agitates, provokes, and keeps quarrels alive. Love does the reverse: it "covereth all sins," choosing to absorb and forgive rather than expose and inflame.

The image of stirring is vivid. Hatred is restless; it digs up old offenses, repeats grievances, and fans small sparks into flames. Wherever hatred is at work, conflict multiplies, because the hateful heart wants the quarrel to continue. Love operates by a different instinct.
