The following verses move from human wisdom to the LORD's wisdom in creation: by wisdom he founded the earth and established the heavens. "She is a tree of life" continues the personification of wisdom as a woman whose worth and ways have been described in the previous verses. A tree gives fruit, shade, stability, and continuing life, so the image is fuller than a momentary reward. The phrase "to them that lay hold upon her" calls for an intentional response. Wisdom is to be received, embraced, and made part of life. "Retaineth her" adds perseverance. The proverb blesses every person who holds wisdom fast, rather than merely admiring it from a distance.
