What Does Proverbs 3:5 Mean?
A father is speaking to his child, and he gives one of the most quoted lines of counsel in all of Scripture. To trust with all the heart is to lean the whole weight of ourselves on God, holding nothing back in a private corner. The picture in the second half is of leaning, putting our weight down on something to hold us up. Our own understanding is real and God-given, yet it is a small and partial thing. It cannot bear the full load. We see a few steps; God sees the road and the country beyond it.
This still welcomes our thinking. It simply asks that we stop making our own sight the final word. Jesus walked this road perfectly, trusting His Father through Gethsemane when His own understanding recoiled, praying 'not my will, but thine, be done' (Luke 22:42).
