Psalms 118:19 Meaning and Explanation

The imagery shifts to gates—the entry points to God's sanctuary and the realm of righteousness. Gates are both literal (the tabernacle gates) and symbolic: they represent the boundary between the secular and the holy, the unrighteous and the righteous. The speaker's request 'Open to me the gates of righteousness' is both practical and spiritual. He seeks entry to the tabernacle to worship, but also seeks admission into God's righteous order and presence.

The parallelism 'I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD' flows naturally from entry. Once through the gates, the speaker will worship. This is worship not from a distance but from within the sacred space, in God's house, as part of the righteous community. The verse depicts the pilgrimage of the righteous: from outside, seeking entry; through the gates into the sanctuary; and into the act of praise itself. It captures the longing for access to God and the resolution to praise once that access is granted.
